Abbey Wood Field Gun Crew Members 2014

Abbey Wood Field Gun Crew 2014 won the Penalties Cup at the RNRMC Field Gun Competition on 31 May 2014 at HMS Collingwood. The penalties Cups is awarded to the crew with the fewest penalties incurred during the competition runs. Abbey Wood completed the uncommon feat of incurring no penalties over all eight of their competition runs. Other crews incurred just one penalty so the achievement was not with out challengers.

Your never more alive than on the start line in the final

Why are you running FG?
I get an extra couple of dits to spin at the party on the Saturday night after the final.

Charlie

Field Gun Officer / Pins

Previous experience
Chief Timekeeper on FG Committee for 6 years. FGO for ABW in 2004. Pin Number for ABW in 2004. B Crew at Collingwood in 2000. Led the first team over to South Africa to take part in Field Gun in Ladysmith. Arranged the first FG foray to the Windsor Tattoo in 2009. Judge at the Birmingham Tattoo held at the NIA twice. Judge at the Millennium Stadium when Field Gun was performed as a warm up to the Speedway event in 2010.

Why are you running FG?
It is the ultimate team sport and to be part of a crew is a privilege. The camaraderie it generates is second to none and with the support roles that need to be filled (timekeepers, judges, buffer, etc) almost anyone can be included. Running in ABW means that you get to mix with people you wouldn’t meet in your daily working life. ABW crews are always a healthy mix of all 3 services which brings banter and competition to the training arena, and creates friendships that last beyond the here and now. This also creates a great social atmosphere.

Can’t remember that far back! Suffice to say this is my 7th season as No1 Trainer at Abbey Wood (x4), Collingwood (x2) and Neptune.

Best experience
Impossible to split these: ’02 – 2nd with Caledonia /’10 – 3rd with Abbey Wood; on both occasions we were completely overlooked and scared the s##t out of all the “bigger” crews! I expect this to be surpassed this year of course!

Why are you involved with Field Gun this year?
Why not? Different crew, different characters and unique experience each time. Abbey Wood seasons are always just that little bit more challenging, and we all like a good challenge! Also, this is probably my last opportunity to compete in the Field Fun arena; how could I resist?

Every year is different!

Why are you running FG?
I love the team spirit, the drive, commitment and discipline that come together to provide a single focus for the crew. It's a good laugh, provides entertainment all year round and a great opportunitiy for some interesting photos! Not to forget the fantastic people and the constant banter which are a never-ending source of fun!

Can’t blame Dinger this year so it must be that parrot on my shoulder volunteering my services! Someone shoot it!
What’s good?? – The camaraderie, witty banter, team spirit, the aches and pains plus a free Polo shirt this year!!

Why are you running FG?
Doing it for the challenge and the unbeatable experience of competing in the competition at Collingwood. The banter between the different fighting arms that make up a truly tri service team.

Coming 3rd in the final at Collingwood in 2010. This only just beats a training session in 2006, which saw my gun wheel escape, and career directly towards my son…

Why are you running FG? With it’s Tri-Service environment, and the nature of ABW, means that it is experience, rather than youth, which make up the crew; they are running, because they want to run. It is this which helps ABW FG to regularly punch above its weight.

Why are you running FG?
Being part of a well oiled (?) team, to enjoy all what I believe that the Field Gun Team can bring, the fun, the Jointery of ABW and building a strong team bond. And pushing this 48 year old body to its limits!

The Tri –Service environment opens up a new line of banter, good will and camaraderie, following the ethos of Field Gun..

Carrying other heavy ends (namely Bebbs and Paul Buckley) and watching No1 dance in Birmingham in 2011.

Why are you running FG?
Because I'm not allowed to play rugby anymore and it's a good excuse to get out of the office. The best bit about running for ABW is watching the RAF team members attempting to march.

Best FG experience
Meeting Gregor. He really is an inspiration and never fails to give great advice and tips.

What’s good about being a part of ABW FG crew?
I have always wanted to be in the Royal Navy but I failed the aptitude tests so joined the RAF. This is the closest I could get, and getting to relive a great Naval victory is amazing. It just makes me proud of the Senior Service. I consider myself fortunate and proud to be able to ‘Run the Gun’ for this crew who has an awesome team ethos; some of the best guys and girls I’ve been fortunate to come across in my service career. Actually, it’s an ideal opportunity to meet chicks and get very drunk every Thursday night :))

Losing my finger in training last year...

Best experience
Having my finger put back on. Training for the NIA was awesome. I have put on a load of weight over the last few months so put myself on a new diet and fitness regime, called the CHE diet (as Tom Cruise) and all you can eat is cheesy hammy eggs and do 50 x 100 kg dead lifts a day. I dropped 3 sizes in two weeks!

Why are you running FG?
I am running for my team, for myself and mostly for my girlfriend Katie (I love you Katie). I am still new to field gun and having missed out through injury last year, I am aiming to run my first Collingwood competition this year. The camaraderie is unbelievable. My job in the crew is extracto, but sometimes I think that the crew is the gun and I'm the extractor; extracting joy, enthusiasm and brotherly love from my fellow field gunners. Go team!!
