Abbey Wood Field Gun Crew Members 2013

On Saturday 1st June 2013 The Abbey Wood Field Gun were presented with the Sports Lottery Cup after winning the Plate II Final at this years RNRMC Field Gun Competition. The Cup was presented by DE&S Director Technical, Air Vice Marshall Julian Young and was collected by Crew Captain Lt Tom Sheehan, RN and POPT Scott Wain RN, ably assisted By POPT Wain’s son Ethan and daughter Maya.

The Abbey Wood Tri Service Field Gun owe thanks to all those who have supported and enabled our training this year. Special thanks go to members of the DES Infrastructure team for their support and encouragement both before and during the training period at Abbey Wood; Those members of staff who park their cars by the entrance to car park B who followed our notices and gave us the space in which to train; the teams and team leaders who allowed the crew time away from their desks to train and compete, And finally all those of you who offered their support and encouragement whilst we trained here and also came to HMS Collingwood on Saturday to add your vocal support.

Why are you running FG?
I like being part of a team, whether you are a civilian or military. You are part of a close knit family with a strong ethos to succeed as one.

Why are you running FG?
We were the first truly tri service crew and continue to build on that. Field gun fosters long term friendships through the intense effort put in by all the crew to bring about a safe and successful end on the Saturday afternoon of the competition.

Very hard to pick a best moment as each year is packed full of highlights. Saying that, coming 3rd in 2010 was probably quite high on the list!

What’s good about being a part of ABW FG crew?
It's a good laugh, provides entertainment all year round and a great opportunities for some interesting photos!

Making the final last year with HMS Bulwark was a great experience, one that I would love to repeat again (touch wood!!)

Why are you running FG?
I had such a great time last year, and I wanted the chance to run it again. I enjoy the camaraderie, the banter and the sense of achievement when it all goes right.

Completing my first Brickwoods last year. A great
competition which culminated in an excellent night out in Pompey!!

Why are you running FG?
I was looking for a sport that combined physical hard work and skill with an active social calendar. Field Gun provides this on a backdrop of naval history and military drill that has it leagues ahead of ‘mainstream’ sports. Oh, and civvies aren’t allowed to play!! Ha!

I've ran out of clean T-Shirts so 2 new ones is a double bonus. I'm running because I enjoy the team ethic and the physicality of the sport.
Running with a Tri-Service, all ranks Abbey Wood Team has been a fantastic experience. The camaraderie and banter has been second to none and I am looking forward to next year already.

Who knows why I’m running again! Its got to be that bloody parrot on my shoulder still volunteering my services! Will someone shoot it! Taking up extreme sports after this season for a rest!

Why are you running FG ?
I enjoy the pressure, mainly self inflicted, of being part of a team training and working hard to move a massive piece of metal from one end of the track to the other, where one slight mistake can be the difference between success or failure.

What’s good about being a part of ABW FG crew? Because I'm not allowed to play rugby anymore and it's a good excuse to get out of the office. The best bit about running for ABW is watching the RAF team members attempting to march.

What’s good about being a part of ABW FG crew?
Doing it for the challenge and the unbeatable experience of competing in the competition at Collingwood. The banter between the different fighting arms that make up a truly tri service team.

Why are you running Field Gun this year?
I love the team cohesion and the fact that every member of the crew is as important as the next one. It’s good phys and it gives you an extreme sense of pride when you’re on the track. The best thing about ABW is that we demonstrate that the old and bold amongst us can still put together a formidable crew without relying on the essence of youth…!!

Losing my finger in training last year...

Best Field Gun experience
Having my finger put back on. Training for the NIA was awesome. I have put on a load of weight over the last few months so put myself on a new diet and fitness regime, called the CHE diet (as Tom Cruise) and all you can eat is cheesy hammy eggs and do 50 x 100 kg dead lifts a day. I dropped 3 sizes in two weeks!

Why are you running FG/What’s good about being a part of ABW FG crew?
I am running for my team, for myself and mostly for my girlfriend Katie (I love you Katie). I am still new to field gun and having missed out through injury last year, I am aiming to run my first Collingwood competition this year. The camaraderie is unbelievable. My job in the crew is extracto, but sometimes I think that the crew is the gun and I'm the extractor; extracting joy, enthusiasm and brotherly love from my fellow field gunners. Go team!!

Why are you running this year?
The intensity of competition, the pressure of performing as part of a team knowing that one tiny mistake is the difference between winning and losing, the fun and camaraderie that is exists amongst the Crew both on and off the track – and pushing your body to its limits.

Why are you running FG? I have always wanted to be in the Royal Navy but I failed the aptitude tests so joined the RAF. This is the closest I could get, and getting to relive a great Naval victory is amazing. It just makes me proud of the Senior Service. I consider myself fortunate and proud to be able to ‘Run the Gun’ for this crew who has an awesome team ethos; some of the best guys and girls I’ve been fortunate to come across in my service career. Actually, it’s an ideal opportunity to meet chicks and get very drunk every Thursday night :))

Why are you running Field Gun this year?
Being part of a real team sport, being run by a real team focused exclusively on one aim. Abbeywood is a truly tri service team with a blend of skill & experience with the banter to match.
